not punished. But I was talking about giving up power (i.e. power sharing, committee chairs, etc.) not showing a willingness to compromise to get work done. After having voted to put them in the majority, to just watch them give up (some of) that power simply because they can't get their chit together to back a speaker would indeed by "rightly" punished. (even if only by more voters staying home because what's the point)

I don't think the GOP can blame the Dems for not supporting McCarthy the first time, and I certainly don't blame them for getting out of the way to let the GOP expose what a mess they are. But I think it's fine to point out that even a handful of them saying "you know what, voting for McCarthy is better than the possible alternative (i.e. Jordan, no speaker, etc.), so I'll do that." would also have been "compromise" to be applauded.
