I think that "independent thinking" has an entirely different connotation

than in the recent past. Today it is "thinking" that is highly influenced by certain social media, rather than conventional news sources. In other words, it is usually groupthink, informed by opinions based on distortions of reality. This kind of stuff is pawned off as just perspective, as credible as any other.
