I agree with you. Any and all factors should be on the table -

While I think there’s something to be said for alternative community problem solving that doesn’t involve guns and nightsticks, (often, a lot of things have not gone well in someone’s life up to the point where the cop has them in handcuffs), that policy adjustment has to be better messaged than “defund the police.”

To the extent there were people out there doing that, I did not agree with messaging things in that way. But that’s where we seem to be at in this society in 2023. Binary red/blue politics means I have to choose between pro-BLM or pro-police - that’s how it feels to me anyway. Me? I believe generally in the cause of racial justice and I want the police to treat people fairly regardless of race. I also want to support good policing because I know how hard it is (full disclosure: I was not a cop but used to work in criminal justice). I still like to think that it doesn’t have to be an us vs. them thing.
