What happens if a party's nominee dies before the election?

While looking for the answer to this question I found this interesting piece that addresses that and other scenarios, i.e. candidate dies after filling deadlines have passed, candidate dies after the primaries but before the convention, candidate dies after the nominating convention but before the election, candidate dies after winning the election but before being inaugurated.

Passing it along for any interested. These scenarios are never impossible and are not at all far-fetched in this cycle.

I wonder what would happen if a candidate died only a day or so before the election?
