It’s not charity. It is an investment in preventing a hot war with China,
Not to mention stopping Putin’s ambitions to reconstitute the Soviet Union in their tracks. It will cost us far more in a few years if we cave to this nonsense.
Ukraine funding is not about the budget. The republicans had 0 discipline and blew out our deficits a decade into our longest economic recovery during the Trump years. Even before Covid. The debt default crisis was pure theater - nothing that could matter to the deficit was even on the table. Then the nihilist wing of the Repub party started shutting everything down just to protest the idea of a compromise to avoid default. Nothing material to the budget is on the table now either. Ukraine funding doesn’t move the needle even just in the defense portion of the budget. That total rejection of the idea of compromise is the biggest threat to our fiscal health and creditworthiness.
This isn’t about charity, or budget discipline, not even a little. It is about tearing shit down, period. For some repubs it might even be about support for autocratic aggression around the world. It’s about that, or just watching the world burn, and if we cave to the repub autocrats in ending support for Ukraine’s right to be free now, we’ll very possibly be spending many multiples more and be committing our own forces to preventing autocratic aggression in Europe and the Pacific.
