The answer? Super white paint. Start using it on roads and buildings to reduce temperatures. It's a stopgap but every little bit helps.

Policy changes would help, too. When we had our place in Hawaii, we put solar panels on the roof. They generated power for the HECO grid when we weren't there and gave us an energy credit. New construction in that state should require them. In Arizona, my mother-in-law put in solar panels, but the legislature charged a premium to use them to cover losses by the electric company. That's just plain stupid.
