Though it was released in 1978, it described the culture of 1962-ish, IMO.

It was backward-looking and nostalgic when released, in other words.

It was boomers in the mid-to-late '70s writing about the late adolescents of the generation before them. These kids were graduating college at the same time the American Graffiti kids were graduating high school.

I agree the audience to which it was released and at whom it was targeted were privileged white boomers who were coming of age--like, say, me--but it didn't depict privileged white boomers coming of age.

When this guy says the '70s were the age of double-knit and disco, he loses me entirely. For me the '70s were the age of the Grateful Dead, the Allman Brothers, Little Feat, segueing into Elvis Costello, Television, the Ramones, Joe Jackson, and then exiting with the Damn the Torpedoes album by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. With an overlay of Bob Marley and Bunny & the Wailers.

People who put down the 70s usually are people who a) weren't there and b) don't realize that what we now think of as "the 60s" actually occurred between about 1965 and 1973. This guy, though, was evidently there, so he has no excuse.
