On July 4 this year, I sat in on a living history event at Poplar Forest.

It was two men speaking about slavery in colonial Virginia and they addressed this very subject. One of the men was making wood shingles, using various hand tools. They made the obvious point that, in fact, many male slaves were skilled artisans, like brick masons, cabinet makers, wood carvers, etc. As slaves they did not have the ability to choose their trade and they certainly weren't compensated for their work. Of course, there were white artisans too, who were free and who were paid for their work. So, the fact they learned trades as slaves only served to benefit their master.
