The context for Clinton's quote:
"You know, to just be grossly generalistic, you could put half of Trump's supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables. (Laughter/applause) Right? (Laughter/applause) They're racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic – you name it. And unfortunately, there are people like that. And he has lifted them up. He has given voice to their websites that used to only have 11,000 people – now have 11 million. He tweets and retweets their offensive hateful mean-spirited rhetoric. Now, some of those folks – they are irredeemable, but thankfully, they are not America.

But the "other" basket – the other basket – and I know because I look at this crowd I see friends from all over America here: I see friends from Florida and Georgia and South Carolina and Texas and – as well as, you know, New York and California – but that "other" basket of people are people who feel the government has let them down, the economy has let them down, nobody cares about them, nobody worries about what happens to their lives and their futures; and they're just desperate for change. It doesn't really even matter where it comes from. They don't buy everything he says, but – he seems to hold out some hope that their lives will be different. They won't wake up and see their jobs disappear, lose a kid to heroin, feel like they're in a dead-end. Those are people we have to understand and empathize with as well."

It was a dumb thing to say because it was obviously going to be taken out of context, but the deplorables in that quote are exactly the ones who showed up on Jan 6 and have been put on trial since then for their crimes. Is there a better name for that cohort than "deplorable"? If you identify with them then I guess the shoe fits. But for those in the other basket, then I think it is absolutely tragic that anybody in that basket voted for Trump.

And for Biden's semi-fascism quote:
"And what we’re seeing now is either the beginning or the death knell of an extreme MAGA philosophy. It’s not just — it’s not just Trump. It’s the –it’s the entire philosophy that underpins — it’s — I’m going say something — it’s almost like semi-fascism, the way in which it deals.

For the first time, you have 50 percent of the American people — 50 percent of the American people say their greatest concern — over 50, I think it’s 51 percent in the latest polls — concerned about whether or not democracy can be sustained.

Did you ever think — 2 years ago, 5 years ago, 10 years ago — we’d be talking about sustaining democracy in the United States of America?"

If you don't see the parallels between Trumpism and the approaches of fascists over the past century you're willfully blind. I find throwing the "fascist" label around to be stupid in general, but it was an accurate description in that context. So yes, I have no problem with that quote.

In short, yes, there is a fundamental difference between the "things" that Trump says and the things that I tolerate. The repellent part of his comments is in taking a Memorial Day tweet and turning it into an all-caps screed against his perceived enemies, while saying they are trying to destroy our country. Why would that be acceptable behavior for a candidate for President? Why did you have to immediately whaddabout to Clinton and Biden instead of defending or condemning Trump?
