The funny thing is Trump is so laughably incompetent

that I have no actual concern he would have the ability to pull a real coup off that would truly cement himself into power.

However, I will say that our institutions are on such shaky ground now (at least at the federal level), that the groundwork for a future coup by someone younger, more charismatic, more competent (and ruthless) is far more likely than at any point at least in my own lifetime. I would have laughed at that possibility 20 years ago but once enough people truly go off the deep end, anything is possible.
