attract more workers when a shortage sets in, because you're constrained by needing more tax dollars to pay for it, and those not wanting to raise taxes on those that have to vote to re-elect them.

That's a pretty typical scenario for any broad based public sector job, be it police, fire, or teachers. And that's essentially what you're creating under a single payer set-up, thanks to the monopsony scenario our old friend Emmanuel Goldstein often talked about. Teacher shortages have existed for as long as I've been married to a couple, which is most of my adult life. They may be worse now than they ever were, after COVID. In the private sector, when you see shortages of plumbers, engineers, IT folks, etc. you see salaries go up for those fields to attract more people to them. And you then charge more for their services to pay for it. You don't see that mentality much for the public sector, and you can't have the former without the latter.

Again, not my intent to say we won't or shouldn't go to a single payer system, but let's at least be honest about what consequences that will bring. And it's not just problems filling nursing shortages, it's also needing to stay under revenues with lower levels of services, longer wait times, less innovation, etc.
