I don’t really agree with that analysis. The lack of enthusiasm FOR

Macron is a function of 3 things, primarily. 1 - Macron has a track record this time, as opposed to 5 years ago. By definition policies piss off a large chunk of voters - they have things to be passionately angry about as opposed to newbies they consider. 2 - Macron is or at least comes across as a detached elitist, and so he is far from beloved personally. 3 - circumstances couldn’t suck much more for incumbents. Macron is as much to blame for inflation in the minds of French voters as Biden is to American voters, which of course makes no sense - neither is materially responsible for the inflation in the US, France, and everywhere else. But voters blame the chief executive - always.

France is extremely fractious. What country isn’t? Democracies give themselves room to be fractious, unlike China or Russia. Yet France came together in convincing fashion on one thing - rejecting Le Pen’s rwnj extremism. Not to rally around the incumbent. I don’t see that as hollow at all. I think it’s significant. I hope of a continuing trend, although that’s not certain at all.
