control over Crimea or Luhansk and Donetsk for the last 8 years anyway.

It's one thing to keep an invader out of Kyiv and it's another to push entrenched troops out of Luhansk or Donetsk, in essence switching places with the Russians in their assault on Sumy or Chernihiv.

There are reasons for maybe ceding some of what they didn't really have, before February 2022.

I don't "assume" they'll give up land but it wouldn't surprise me if they do in order to get peace.
