I guess it’s possible that Biden said out loud what everyone is thinking,


or even the nature of an unspoken “policy”. But I don’t think it’s the only, or even the likeliest, explanation. The west has been working to find a diplomatic solution - Macron in particular has spoken to Putin directly several times since the invasion. Pretty good chance imo that such things are being coordinated, given the overall level of coordination we’ve seen. I don’t really think Biden has a better chance than Macron of succeeding. Just doesn’t appear to be a deal to be had right now.

It’s at least as likely that Biden simply went off script after being moved by first hand experience with the refugee crisis in Poland. That would be Biden-like. Especially given immediate reactions from the Biden team to the remark.

Obviously would be extremely damaging if it were credibly revealed that western policy is to extend Ukraine’s suffering in order to weaken Putin.
