I like to think I know the map of Europe, but I noticed the other day this

little space on the Baltic between Lithuania and Poland. It's Kaliningrad, formerly known as Konigsberg. The Soviet Union captured it during WWII and administratively retained it as part of the Potsdam agreement. But I had no idea that it remained a Russian enclave even after the fall of the USSR! Apparently, it is the only ice-free port in Russia, and when I say "in Russia," I mean it's a part of it but not contiguous. It seems strange. Not like there aren't other non-contiguous places in the world (hello Alaska). But its existence took me by suprise.
