like, "How can you live over there? There's high crime! Especially on Capitol Hill!!" LOL! I lived on Capitol Hill. And yeah, there were parts of it that were rougher than others. A guy was murdered at a convenience store a couple of blocks from me that I used to run or bike by all the time and some shady shit used to go down at an old pool hall next door to that. It was quite a bit more gritty than it is now, but it was in transition and it was very affordable and I loved the bars and club scene and old neighborhoods up there. I lived about four blocks from where the infamous CHAZ was.

When I first moved in, the big crime scene was a donut shop downtown across from the Pike Street Market. It was run by a disreputable guy who tolerated the regular traffic of pimps and drug dealers. The city eventually cleaned that up and as more people moved in a lot of neighborhoods became more gentrified and displaced affordable housing; the typical problem that the city still deals with. Add to that the problem of declining retail business in favor of online options and the impact to the big downtown stores like Nordstrom, Frederick and Nelson, Bon Marche, May Company, etc. (almost all closed now) and it becomes an area the needs some redevelopment attention. This despite the pricy condos and tech workers and cool restaurants that abound downtown.
