Oil supplies are fungible internationally. Supplies in the US dropped precipitously during the Trump Admin. Not due to any of their policies or Biden’s. Because the price fell off a cliff and much of domestic production became uneconomic. That’s an expensive switch to turn off, and back on again.

Even with that reality the US is the largest worldwide producer by a significant margin. But Russia happens to be #2, and has been described as a gas station masquerading as a country. We do have allies who depend on Russia as a primary supplier, but we’re not one of them.

As long as oil remains the primary way we power our lives, Russia, along with other pariahs like Venezuela, Saudi Arabia, and even Iran will continue to support themselves with their one commodity of value. One commodity economies tend to become dysfunctional and ultimately pariahs, like all 3 of those. If you’d like to cut that financial spigot off, we’ll have to hammer the value of the oil they depend on, because the US can’t become the world’s gas station.
