That, in a nutshell, is why Trumpletons like Russia

It's not that they necessarily on board with the details of what Putin is in favor of or does. It's that he's a Culture War strongman.

It's a different flavor of White Christian Nationalism, but one that's wholly appropriate to the Russian sphere. We don't have to like it, but it's not America so it's not our business anyway. It's part of the sort of peculiar isolationism they're in favor of. America is for Americans. Russia is for Russians. Israel is for the Jews, etc...You can see it in their support of Mercantile trade policies (Domestic free trade, but protectionism abroad) as well. It's a big enough world for all of these different tribes and, so long as no one is actively aggressive towards us, the real enemies are those that want to soften borders and meld cultures.
