I am definitely for thinking long and hard about eliminating or at least
Mitigating divisive measures up and down our society. I think mask mandates provide questionable benefit, because it’s almost impossible to police. If you wear the wrong mask the right way, it’s pretty useless, and if you wear the right mask the wrong way, like below the nose, it’s pretty useless. In large groups of people, there’s always a lot of both.
Vaccine mandates - I totally get it when they prevent infections and spread; I get them far less when they mostly just protect the vaccinated person from terrible outcomes.
Personally, I think societal angst over both is absurdly out of proportion, but they are what they are. Dems may very well be politically motivated in an election year on this stuff, which is how democracies are supposed to work. I think it’s worth asking whether the costs to society in terms of divisiveness are worth the public health benefits - again, not of the theoretical benefits if mask mandates got 100% compliance with right masks worn properly - as it really is, with many “complying” uselessly.
