The mob doesn't know what they're doing. They're the mob. The mob likes things that are shiny and chrome, is prone to substantial lapses in judgement, and will almost never defer gratification. We elect leaders to make hard choices, not to just follow the polls.

There is, of course, a difference between making hard long term choices and simply abusing power. But that quote doesn't really distinguish.
