The left is completely fucked politically on the COVID issue. Having whipped themselves into a politicized frenzy over a virus in the age of Trump, they now own it completely. As a result, they are stuck implementing and enforcing more and more policy idiocy that is both despised and mocked by most people and certain to fail.

Yet they have no choice but to continue doing the same things while expecting different results (isn't there a word for that?) for two reasons: 1) Their neurotic base, which they must appease, just can't let go of the panic porn, and 2) the termination of the policies in question would lead to zero change in the dynamics of the virus, proving even to the still willfully blind that it was all useless and destructive theater from the beginning. That's a reckoning that they'd like to delay as long as possible.

I really don't think the left understands how badly it is shooting itself in the foot with moderates, but we'll find out soon enough.
