Now, I'm thinking. Up from Slavery was pretty safe and meshed perfectly


with our rural sensibilities. George Washington Carver also met with approval, but I can't think of any books by him. One lesson of his that always stuck with me was when he laid out (was it Tuskegee??) his school grounds instead of imposing sidewalk and "Keep on the Grass signs, he watched where students walked innately and put in walkways there. I thought that idea was genius.
