I disagree with you about the slavery and racism. The US is most definitely

racist and has been for most of its history. The constitution counts black people as 3/5 of a person. Slavery was legal until the passage of the 13th Amendment after a bloody civil war. Then Jim Crow was around so long I was still in elementary school when it was ending. Black people definitely got screwed with GI Bill housing funding and redlining after WWII. Hell, suburbs grew up to create white enclaves! When I was a little kid, my family never had to worry about sundown laws when driving after dark. All of these evils have resulted in the economic disparities we have today.

As I noted yesterday, it is the aspiration to something better that makes the US stand apart. What that means though is being able to confront your demons and admit that we have fallen short. Until that happens, we won't fix anything.
