Co-morbidity matters as it relates to...

...how we address the issue as a society. For example, if COVID deaths could be reduced by 75% simply by locking down the minority of the population that is in a high risk category, then we could have taken such measures instead of the ones we did. I'm not advocating for that -- I'm just pointing out that the fact that co-morbordity is so closely aligned with COVID deaths should have guided our actions. Separately, co-morbidity also matters as it relates to how deaths were coded.

Moving on, the CDC in the most recent report I've seen itself attributed about 70% of the excess deaths to COVID (even based on their dubious classification of COVID deaths), which would mean that 30% (or nearly half the number of COVID deaths) were caused by non-COVID factors. Given that the only other variable that changed last year was the response to COVID, it's fair to conclude that these other excess deaths were caused by the response to COVID. We actually should have expected this to occur, as all the cancelled and never-scheduled treatments, diagnoses, etc., that resulted from the COVID shutdowns would obviously have increased deaths; otherwise, why would these treatments, diagnoses, etc., ever be needed?

I think it's a given that deaths will be below expectations following January 2021 and going forward for a year or two as such a high percentage of deaths attributed to COVID were from the already very old/sick. Many or most of those folks had very little time left COVID or no COVID. The median age of COVID death was past life expectancy. To the extent COVID is what pushed these folks over the edge, they were simply deaths pulled forward by a few days, weeks, months or years. Time will tell, though.

On your last paragraph, I don't think cross-country comparisons are relevant as I've detailed here before. I won't rehash that, though. Regardless, I'll grant you that if we'd stuck everyone in solitary confinement for a year, then we'd most likely have had fewer COVID deaths.

But that is not the only question at hand. Reducing or minimizing COVID deaths -- to the exclusion of considering all other issues -- should never have been the goal. I don't care if Australia, for example, ends up having fewer COVID deaths than America. I would weigh that metric along with all other metrics.
