Your plan was very likely a swiss cheese of coverage. Have you looked

closely at coverage and reimbursement approaches in medical plans? I have several times now on behalf of companies I started.

They still have many ways to screw you, but there were a lot more 10 years ago. So what you saw as a less expensive plan would likely have covered a lot less too.
