I still think we are getting a little lost here. I thought the NYT is
Claiming that Trump write offs for consulting fees are matching payments to Ivanka. If that’s true, then I don’t think Ivanka can treat them as gifts. I think it has to be taxable income to her, because gifts to one’s children are not tax deductible.
Unless we’re talking about different payments to Ivanka.
In any event, if there is anything really earth shattering in here, I think it will be about conflicts of interest. Supposedly Trump foreign properties are keeping him afloat according to the recent returns, and that’s where foreign dignitaries might be dropping some coin to him. The greater interest is in whether he’s screwing the American people, either by benefitting in hidden ways from his own policies or by pay to play from foreign (or any) interests.
