The first half of the story was really fantastic. Don't think I've ever
read 3,000 pages of text that quickly. Almost flawless, really.
The next two books were kind of a disjointed mess, but still entertaining. Not sure we'll ever see a book 6 or 7.
For the series, they did a great job up until the end of last season where the pacing and plot devices just started getting absurd (there was some idiotic mission to kidnap a zombie that really only served to give the White Walkers a dragon and what was portrayed as a weeks-long journey in the first few seasons suddenly became the Westeros Acela Express with armies traveling back and forth across the glob in a matter of hours). Then they really botched some of the interesting plotlines and completely blew it with some of the character arcs in the end.
I don't know if the books will ever get finished, but it may be better if they don't.
