So much that he hired the head of the Alt Right's mouthpiece, Breitbart, to be his campaign chair and closest advisor. I doubt there would even be an Alt Right movement as we know it today without Trump's candidacy.

It has nothing to do IMO with whether Trump is a racist or a bigot - he just knows where his bread is buttered. So when Cville happened, he missed a tremendous opportunity to decouple himself from the white supremacist racist set. He apparently views them as too indispensable to his political base, and so he equivocated, to the loud applause of white supremacists, including David Duke.
