The answer to your question is - it is the best available comprehensive

financial document. There are no publicly available financials for this president, who is IMO the most potentially conflicted president of at least the past 50 years since all presidents have been releasing returns, and arguably the most potentially conflicted ever.

The tax returns are the only ones available for review that carry legal ramifications for inaccuracy, so that makes them the only reliable starting point for transparency. There is no audit of the Trump Org. There are no audited financials to look at (except perhaps with banks from which he's applied for loans, but he sues to keep those things hidden as well). So a detailed tax return is your starting point. It show sources of income, even if offset by loss carryforwards or other deductions to bring tax liability to 0.

One can follow those sources to verify against conflicts, and yeah, potentially illegal activities if for example the income indicated seems not to jibe with his financial circumstances. That is in fact how tax fraud is often detected.

I am less concerned about that, since that is what the IRS does. Look for tax fraud. But I think it should be an absolute imperative to every responsible voter that Trump release his returns, because there is no other way to transparency into his finances - which good governance absolutely dictates for any pres, and especially one with this many potential conflicts of interest.

The IRS does not do that.
