Gandhi was a nationalist, I agree. He was about freeing his nation from an empire in the post WW2, post colonial world. Nationalism isn't always bad. Context matters of course. For those of us who distrust Trump and the current nationalist wave everywhere, it's more about nativism, assaults on global structures that have contributed to an amazing period of stability compared with a century ago, along with rising militarism. It's using nostalgia for an idealized, really false past to rope in people feeling the insecurities of a very rapidly changing world.

And it's not like Gandhi's nationalism hasn't led to major ugliness over the years, including a confrontation between nuclear powers that had people a little concerned recently. When nationalism, or socialism or other "isms", is combined with populism and demagoguery, that's when these cultural wedge issues start to dominate. Can be about class, gender, race, religion, tribes, lots of things.
