FWIW the article may have just been vaguely written and I'm not sure it's
that important whether these folks walked up to a port of entry, or showed up between them and immediately turned themselves in to Border Patrol to seek asylum. (unless I missed your point entirely, which is possible) These aren't folks that are trying to sneak across and just run (as I believe that would rule them ineligible for asylum), they're trying to use the asylum process because of the flaws in our system/situation right now, in order to actually get asylum or be released with no intention of returning for their hearings. Where they show up to do that isn't that important IMO.
But I'm a little lost on why you say a wall wouldn't do anything to fix this. If it's indeed 5-1 coming between ports, wouldn't that be at the areas where walls could be used to control that? And if we tighten up and improve that asylum process to expedite it, wouldn't it stand to reason those no longer expecting to just be released while they await their hearings would start to cross illegally and run in those same areas?
