I was once a Romney-type Republican but am now independent because I disagree with Trump on policy and principles. The difference between myself and most of the 2016 "Never Trump" crowd is that I concluded immediately that for Trump to lose Hillary had to win and was willing to say so at the time. I was frankly stunned that more people didn't fall on the sword for that cause, even knowing that they would disagree with Hillary's policies (I would have). Jeff Flake, Paul Ryan, and many others are out of Congress now anyways and all they have to show for it is a deficit-bloating tax cut and some judges. To me the trade off in policy outcomes was always worth it in the name of preventing Trump's rise.

Romney's article started off well, but circled around to something akin to Flake and Sasse by the end, where he said he was going to focus on getting things done for the conservative cause. From my perspective, the first and only priority for Romney should be opposing Trump at every turn and working to see that he is removed from office for what are now obvious crimes during the election. A few domestic policy wins don't offset the far greater damage that Trump does to our country by lying from the White House everyday and flipping our alliances on their heads.
