A few observations about Kavanaugh

1. His opening statement seemed genuine. His seething rage at what this had been doing to his family highlighted precisely why this issue should have been investigated in private.

2. His rage came across many times as entitlement. He even said he had been all but confirmed, and was now upset that this thing that had been dangled in front of him, that he thought he had earned, was taken away. That sense of entitlement is really unfortunate for a judge. I would expect humility, even handedness, etc.

3. His temperament, his arrogant petulance whenever a Democrat deigned trouble him with a question, and his rising voice, consistently demonstrated a lack of the evenmindedness level headedness one expects of any judge, let alone a SCOTUS Justice. Admittedly the topic at hand was inherentty emotional and difficult and personal.

4. His partisanship was remarkable and unprecedented. He took potshots, traded in the usual "liberal tears" taunting, and otherwise engaged in behavior I don't think we have ever seen from a SCOTUS nominee. It was disheartening in many ways. He amped up the outrage at the Dems which is, of course, silly -- the Ford allegation was the genesis of the hearing, and his going after the Dems once again made it about a process, not about the substance.

5. He came across as every bit the political animal, the partisan lawyer that many feared. I held out hope he would impress as thoughtful; instead he acted like a surly teen who was in danger of losing the Bimmer his daddy had promised him. He will rule from the bench with the same surliness, reminded of the time his entitlement to a position was nearly taken from him.

6. None of the above matters to the GOP. He will be confirmed despite his arrogance, anger, lashing out, partisanship, and refusal to make a pretense of seeming reasonable. His partisan hackery and rage will become the model for future nominees. Allegations will always be fake news. Facts will be alternative. Our republic will suffer for it and the integrity of the SCOTUS will suffer for it.

We have had a good run as a representative democracy.
