Inadvertently, ER visits increased with ACA also
People would just deal with their issues on their own at home, but now that they have insurance, they are showing up in great numbers to the ER, even for minor colds and such (big waste of resources). Well at least the ER/hospital gets paid for these now vs people defaulting on their ER bills. Of course primary care like me can't see them all either, not enough of us, so a lot of them are getting deflected to the ER since they can't get into a PCP. I work a lot of urgent care for our clinic also, and we have 3 urgent cares, I routinely see 40+ a shift. Takes some load off the ER's, but there truly are not enough health care providers and specialists to see everyone that needs seen in this country.
Unfortunately it takes 8 yrs college + med school plus another 3 yrs post med school residency before you can get them out in the working world, so it's not a quick fix. even mid-levels are going to need several years of schooling before they are ready.
