"Delays have grown so long, they’re approaching — and, for some hospitals — surpassing levels 11 years ago that prompted the ruling Ontario Liberals to commit new funds and focus on taming wait times, with hip and knee replacements one of their first five priorities.

More than a decade later, nearly six in 10 people in the London region who need a new knee, and half who need a new hip, wait more than six months after a specialist tells them surgery is the only option.

But bad as the waits are now, they could get worse.

Last winter, some hospitals ran out of money for the surgeries months before the budget year ended in March — hospitals in Woodstock, St. Thomas and Strathroy mothballed their operating rooms while London postponed 500 surgeries."

"It appears the Liberal government doesn’t care about suffering of patients so long as it’s outside of Toronto, said Jeff Yurek, the Progressive Conservative health critic at Queen’s Park.

“I hope the reasoning isn’t that the Kathleen Wynne government wants it to look after Toronto and Toronto alone,” the Elgin-Middlesex-London MPP said."
