UVA has student conduct rules, but I get nervous when ...

we start trying to legislate "microaggression" when most can't even define it. Maybe it's a generational thing, but I don't get it either.

The issue for UVA is that the recording of the panel meeting sounded civil. I don't know what happened afterwards, but that's what UVA has to explain. IMO (I could be wrong): was the student's First Amendment violated? Was he suspended because he challenged the professor? Was he suspended because he was being an "asshole?" Was he suspended for post panel meeting behavior ... and is that even relevant in a First Amendement case? A lot of those questions don't favor UVA given the known circumstances of the case.

I honestly don't know. Perhaps a constitutional lawyer can give color.
